Osama Died...and??

Although I almost didn't want to feed into the media frenzy surrounding this "momentous" event, I can't help it.  I have never seen the death of one person gotten so many people riled up and bloodthirsty.

Didn't Osama already die already?  When was the last time he surfaced at all?  Before today, most Americans had forgotten Osama existed and many thought he had died long ago and we just didn't know about it.  And now we kill him and its like the 4th of July 10 times over, I just don't get it.

What kind of threat was Osama anymore to us?  He's been in hiding since '01 and our war in Afghanistan had effectively brought his dealings to a halt.  He hasn't done anything since he messed with us except sit in caves (and then a mansion) for almost a decade.  What significance does killing him have?  The fact that he masterminded 9/11 (and wasn't the only one either, Khalid Sheikh muhammad is still in Guantanamo, people aren't screaming for his head like Osama)?  Isn't it a little too late for "Vengeance"?  Its been 10 years now, it feels a little hollow accepting this as vengeance or justice.

Where was this reaction when we killed Saddam?  I thought he was almost as bad as Osama.  No one remembers his death except maybe those few who saw the execution and remember the picture with a noose around his neck.

What kind of impact will this actually have?  Nothing.  The media is trying to hype it up, but its utterly irrelevant to our war efforts.  They are saying BS like "It will restore faith in the US as a world power".  A couple problems with that:  a) before this, many assumed osama just died.  now everyone will be reminded it took us almost 10 years...b) we can't really use the excuse "well, we didn't really look for him and it wasn't a priority".  Now, it seems like we were looking for him for a decade until we found him.

Any true "victory" from this is hollow.  We spent the better part of a decade looking for one man.  I don't see how its such a success that we finally found him. A blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while, but thats not a "success".

And while people on CNN are saying this will help the war efforts, the only effect I can see this having is spurring on the forces against us.

And why must people be so bloodthirsty for this man.  People across social media have been saying some scary things.  Even if the person is Osama, I will not likely cheer at the death of another.

I think the past 6 months in relation to 9/11 have been a sad look at the competency of our government.  It took us almost a decade to capture one guy in afghanistan and it took us almost a decade to get healthcare to 9/11 first responders.

  1. Osama Bin Laden is more a symbol than anybody of importance. He was the leader of a group that would have replaced him with another leader when he died, and that is what they likely will do.

But, regardless, his death does symbolize our ability to do what we set out to do. And that's what we're celebrating. The Navy Seals are fucking badasses. That's what we're celebrating.

I guess its just the rational cynic in me, but when I see this as symbolizing our "ability to do what we set out to do", its like the joke about the guy who completed a puzzle in 6 months and thought it was awesome because the box said 3-6 years.

Osama is only a symbol and unfortunately, nothing happens when you destroy a symbol. Often, that symbol becomes even more symbolic (martyrdom)
