Why are they fun? First of all, in many genres, they don't make them like they used to. There will never be as good of a romance film as Casablanca, nor will there ever be as good of a Western as The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, and there will never be a comedic genius to rival that of Chaplin or the marx Brothers.
But the most interesting thing about older movies (I am thinking 70s and later here), to see how different and older people look
I dunno why, but its always been intriguing to me to see actors/actresses 20 years later. There is something to be said about how different some of the people from Animal House look, like Kevin Bacon:
This one from animal house shows Bacon in the first acting role of his career and he was the breakout character (which probably launched him into getting the part in footloose a few years later). Now, he has been around the block (or whatever hollywood has that you can say that about).
There is just something intriguing in my eyes about glimpsing actors at the beginning of their careers and then much later on.
